I’d like to share with you one of my favorite morning rituals – It’s journaling. It’s the first thing I do when I wake up. Write my goals for the day, getting them out of my head and down on paper.

Personally, I want to make a conscious effort to move the needle, daily, by getting these ideas out, through the process of writing.

Why paper? If you’re like me, when I open my computer or phone I am immediately inundated with other message notifications. Within seconds I’ve spiraled down the distraction rabbit hole, which is why low-tech journaling works for me.

I use two journaling systems. One is the five-minute journal by UJ Ramdas and the second type is your basic college journal book that you can purchase from Wal-Mart, Target, or whatever store you prefer.

Establishing the Habits of Happiness

The five-minute journal is simple. It starts by asking you, “What three things you’re grateful for” followed by three tasks you’d like to accomplish and then finally one affirmation. Typically at night, I’ll go back and review my achievements. The whole process reminds me of the main things I want to accomplish, my daily goals.

According to Ramdas, “In under 5 minutes a day, you begin to practice the habits of happiness that are now proven to improve your well-being through over 20 years of research.”

You’ve got to know your goals before you can reach them. So, starting the day knowing your goals is a powerful daily method to realizing self-worth by reaching that goal.

What Does This Have to Do With My Part-time Job Search?

The five-minute journal is such a simple yet enjoyable system. It enables me to achieve my personal and business goals and it has made me realize how useful it can be for people looking for a part-time job as well.  Part-time job seekers can use this system to improve their job search process and use intentional objectives to find the right job this time.

Ask yourself, what are three things you really want in your next part time job? Jot that down and then let’s use the S.M.A.R.T. method to ensure our goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely.

What would the best part-time job look like?

Not sure what you want to improve? Try choosing from this list: wages, commute distance, shifts, hours, industry. Here are some examples:

  • I’d like to make between $12 to $14 an hour
  • Wish I drove less than 10 miles a day round-trip from home
  • Need to work less than 30 hours a week

What would make each of these part-time job attributes ideal?

Next, think about what specific attributes of your ideal part-time job will allow you to do. These are things that are not possible in your current job situation. Here are a few more examples:

  • By earning more money I can work less and still pay down my school loans
  • Driving less than 10 miles per day saves me money on gas
  • Working less that 30 hours a week allows me to focus on my schoolwork while still meeting my financial obligations.

“Jobs To Be Done” Framework

If you’re a part-time job seeker, it’s important to ask yourself at this point why you want a new job. If you’re a business owner hiring a new part-time employee, this is a question you need to answer too. Often a good place to start is using the “jobs to be done” story framework.

Ask yourself: I want [personal or professional goal]. To accomplish this, I know I need [ideal part-time job attribute].

Ok, I know what you’re thinking. Nice framework, but how does that actually play out in your decision making process? Let’s take a look at an example:

I want to start paying down my student loans before I actually graduate. To accomplish this, I know I need to work no more than 30 hours per week so I still have time for school and have a part-time job that pays between $12-$14 per hour to free up money that I can use to pay down my loan.

With the jobs to be done system we essentially collected our set of goals into a single paragraph using the jobs to be done system. Right or wrong I often like using this tool because it helps get down to the bottom of the problem you’re trying to solve.

Earlier we talked about the things we want to change in our next part-time job but it is really more about something deeper we wanted to impact. When you’re thinking about why you want a new job and how it’s going to impact your lifestyle, you build your job search on a strong foundation.

Before a plane takes off, the pilot goes through an extensive checklist to ensure a safe flight.  Sure, the pilot has flown the plane hundreds — if not thousands — of times, but they still use a checklist to ensure a repeat of the same, safe experience as the last flight.

Imagine an airline where they do not review a list? Given a choice between an airline that follows the pre-flight checklist and one that does not, which one would you fly? Arriving safely at your next destination means going with the option that takes the time to prepare.

Interviewing for a part-time job is very similar. Getting through the interview unscathed means taking the time to prepare properly.

Here are a few key questions to get you started.

Part-Time Job Interview Prep: Google the company

Even though you’ve already read the short overview of the company on HipHire.com, it’s important to still take time to Google them because you know they’re doing the same thing to find out a little bit about you before the interview, too.

Find information about the company and learn what products or services they sell. Look for any recent news, both good and bad. Be ready to answer this question, “So, tell me what our company sells.” Not knowing the answer to the easiest questions will shorten your interview quickly.

Next, research the company on sites like glassdoor.com where you can find reviews on the company based on employee feedback. Remember to take the information you read with a grain of salt because what you read might not always be true. If something shows up written by a previous employee, bring this issue up in the interview.

Part-Time Job Interview Prep: Lookup the person you are interviewing with on LinkedIn

Read this person’s full resume on LinkedIn, their career history, where they went to school. Do you have any first connections with individuals who know or have worked with this person?  Maybe prepare a question like, “So, I noticed you went to school at “blank” how do you think this school prepares you for the job you have today? Lastly, looking at someone’s LinkedIn profile will notify them, which is a good thing and hopefully keep them on their toes.

Research the person using a tool like charlieapp.com to discover what this person likes. It also shows news about the company this person works for, aggregating data from a lot of other news sources and provides you another snapshot of the person with whom you’re interviewing.

Part-Time Job Interview Prep: Make a list of 3-5 questions

Be prepared to ask a few questions at the end of the interview. Write these down first after you review the resources listed here. This will help you keep an eye out when you hear this topic in the actual interview.

This is a great opportunity to show the interviewer you’re prepared. If you discover something in your research that is worrisome, make sure to work it into the conversation. Honestly, you are interviewing the company now, and part of this process is confirming that you want to work for them, not just that they want to hire you.

Part-Time Job Interview Prep:Google Their address

The goal is to show up 10-15 minutes before the interview, unless you’re told differently. If you are a hard sleeper, always get up an hour before you responsibilities begin. Be aware of how long it is going to take you to drive or commute. I like to use tools like the Waze App, where it can offer me a few options when it come to the route I take to the interview. Don’t be late, it’s not the traffic’s fault – it’s yours!
